In New Zealand fresh tomatoes are predominantly grown in greenhouses but there is also a small volume grown outdoors. The greenhouse sector is in production all year round while the outdoor fresh tomato sector is seasonal, producing tomatoes in summer and early autumn. The average greenhouse area per production unit continues to increase and yields have also increased significantly. Yields are now comparable with those reported by English and Dutch growers.
The fresh tomato industry has a 'farm gate' value of approximately $80 million, a retail value approaching $120 million, and has over 7,000 people directly dependent on it. Capital investment is estimated at $300 million in 120 hectares of greenhouses.
About 5% of the total fresh tomato production, with an annual FOB value of $10 million, is exported with some consistent export to Australia (during summer), the Pacific Islands and Japan. About 8% of the total consumption of fresh tomatoes is being met by imports from Australia during Winter and early Spring.
